MALT SHOVEL MAD BREWERS
SUMMER 2012 LIMITED RELEASE
HOPPY HEFE
Oh those Lazy days of the hot Australian summer. It can mean only one thing…. you guessed it, another limited release beer from those crazy Malt Shovel Mad Brewers. Having focussed their energy on brewing plenty of the finest James Squire beers for the Christmas and New Year festivities, come February it’s time to have a little fun with our summer release. At my urging, this year they have turned their attention to the wheat beer style, but typically it is not a classic wheat style that will be offered up by our Mad Brewers team.
Brewers Rob Freshwater and Dayton Coffey have combined to craft a wheat beer with serious attitude. The name says it all. Hefeweizen, is a traditional German wheat beer style, “hefe” being a prefix meaning yeast (some yeast retained).
Our Hoppy Hefe however, is a cloudy wheat beer brewed with an outrageous late hop addition creating a strong fruity -citrus hop aroma. While also taking some inspiration for extremes from those “beardy-weirdy” American hop-head brewers, our team, as usual, were not content to follow the plan and stick to using only U.S. hops, nor to use traditional German wheat yeast.
So get ready for a beer with a difference.
The result of their labours is a 7% alcohol by volume mongrel of a wheat beer with no claim to nationality, but one that will happily back pack its way around Australia this summer, while stocks last.
Mad Brewers Hoppy Hefe is presented in its usual 12 x 640ml bottle, per case format and will be available in selected good liquor stores nationally from 14 February 2012, for a limited time only. It will also be available on tap at the James Squire Brewhouses and Brewbars plus a number of selected bar accounts in each state.
The 640ml bottle is the perfect size to share with a friend over a meal and our brewers recommend you try this beer with a spicy Gumbo, a spicy Seafood Paella or for the more timid, perhaps with Chilli Mud Crabs.
Recommended retail price is $79.99 per case and $9.99 per bottle.
Only 8,700 cases have been bottled so make sure you get some straight away.
Yours Hoppily,
Tony Jones
Chief Brewer

I just got 2 bottles and to me the color off the beer for a wheat beer is the same as golden ale and the citra hop is hoppy but the thing is interesting is the brewing with wine yeast as i can taste it in it and dry hopping the ( b-saaz).
I made an enquiry with Dan Murphy’s and they said Hoppy Hefe has been deleted from their product line.
Does anyone know a stockist in the Penrith area?
I am tucking into one right now and i feel worried that one day i may not have any more left. Does anyone know where there are any still available in Perth. Willing to travel.
Awesome brew. Hopefully we’ll see another batch made soon!
I just got a bottle at liqueur land woollies
Awesome drop…I love it and will be looking for more
Excellent Brew!! Definitely hoppy with superb aromatics, floral and spicy. Tastes smooth, toffee and clove characters. Beautiful aroma, interesting and satisfying. Brilliant!!
Great beer. Love it hope you brew more like it
I bought THE case from Foodworks Bacchus Marsh Vic.
It is now all gone and I was left but wanting more….
So I ventured up the hill to the Plough Hotel at Myringiong and helped Mark to finish off his ONLY keg…
again I am left but wanting more…..
Re-Batch required ! Love your work.
@Scott thats not right, as i just purchased a bottle of this stuff a couple of days ago at a Dan Murphys store (maybe just depends on the store)
On topic - a very interesting beer, to put it bluntly… hahaha
Just discovered this lovely wheat beer (july) in sleepy cairns. Not willing to dislose which outlet I found it, fearing some other beer lover might finish em. This stuff us up there with the best german wheat; and its fruit/hoppy aroma makes it shine.! I’d buy the rest if funds allowed…please Malt Shovel , brew this master piece again.
Very, Very good beer, and I have certainly tried a few. Drank as much of this particular beer as was humanly possible while it was around. I really hope this beer is re released sometime soon. Drove all around Perth looking for the last bottles in stock.
