The perfect companion on a winter’s night
Latest release limited to 9,000 cartons

Monday 17 May, 2010 - James Squire, the pioneer of craft beer in Australia, has unveiled its latest brew: James Squire Malt Runner. The limited edition beer is the most recent seasonal brew created by the team at Malt Shovel Brewery and will be available nationally from June 2010.

Tony Jones, James Squire Chief Brewer, said, “Malt Runner lives up to its name - the beer is a complex blend of malt flavours that has a full body without being too bitter. This was a challenge because we wanted to balance the malt with something other than the usual big hop character. The addition of cherry juice, which added a subtle acidity to the brew, proved to be the solution.

“The resulting beer has rich, chocolate-like qualities with a hint of cherry, and a smooth, caramel malt finish; perfect for savouring on a cold winter’s night.”

Malt Runner is the fifth such limited release, following other seasonal brews including James Squire Hop Thief, James Squire Pepperberry Winter Ale and James Squire Rum Rebellion Porter. The 2008 Summer limited edition, James Squire Sundown Lager, was so popular with consumers that it is now part of the permanent range.

Chuck Hahn, James Squire Master Brewer, says the new brew took some time to develop. “Malt Runner is the result of months of tinkering and fine tuning by the brewers at Malt Shovel Brewery,” explains Hahn. “Our brewers love experimenting to find interesting and innovative interpretations of classic beers. Malt Runner is similar in style to a German Bock but, at a more modest 5.2 per cent ABV, is technically more a dark lager.”

Malt Runner is limited to just 9,000 cartons and will be available on-tap at James Squire brewhouses nationally.

A six-pack of James Squire Malt Runner will have a RRP of $18.99, while a carton will be available at $59.99 RRP ($19.99 and $60.99 in South Australia).

    Hello,
I was wondering where Malt Runner cartons are available in Perth.
    Cheers.

Just wanted to say congratulations on another outstanding seasonal release. I work in a bottle shop in QLD and we sold out of Malt Runner 2 hours after receiving it. Cant wait for the hop driven brew later in the year. Keep up the good work and thanks for proving once again that Aussies can make world class beer

  4. Brendon says:

Malt Runner is a winner. I went into Liquor Barons in Swanbourne, WA, last week to enquire about stock availability, after reading a good review by Vic Crossland in The West, who said stocks were a week away,. To my joy, especially once I got back to the office and sampled the first, was that they had stock, so I bought a carton @ $70. The seasonal James Squire beers are always something to look forward to. Although usually an ‘Ale Lover’, especially in colder months, I am enjoying the Malt Runner as an ale-like lager with wonderful winter drinking characteristics. My 77yo father has also enjoyed a couple, stolen, by ‘invitation’ from my carton when visiting my home. He has been ‘educated’ away from lagers, largely thanks to James Squire Pale Ale and Amber Ale.

  5. Jared says:

Great beer, one of the best I have tasted in a long time. I will have to stock up before it runs out. Any chance this will make its way into the permanent range?

  6. [...] I went up to the bar at Latrobe Uni today and was thinking of having a stout when I saw a James Squire Amber ale in the fridge, looked like the best thing there so I asked for that. The publican told me that he had the rep in yesterday and that they had a new beer in, only so many (6?) cases of Malt Runner. [...]

  7. Joshua says:

The new Malt Runner is the best beer made by Squire yet! I certainly hope it becomes part of your permanent range

  8. Andrew says:

The Malt Runner brew is a real winner. Outstanding seasonal release highly recommended for consideration as a regular brew. Congratulations

  9. George Potts says:

Tried the Malt Runner and couldnt get enough, but now my local bottle-o cannot get any more stock.
fingers crossed this becomes a part of there permanent range.

  10. Darren says:

This beer has got to be added to the permanent range, I have bought every carton I can find in Port Hedland, polished it off and now find out I might not be able to buy any more :-(

  11. John Lude says:

9000 Cartons ? 90000 wouldn’t be enough . This is the best dark ale on the market and your just teasing us by saying we can’t have anymore . Whats a man to do. Am feeling a little concerned at this stage!!! Plleeaassseee rectify this error in judgement.

  12. Beer Cartel says:

We’ve got a couple of 6 packs and 12 packs left.

You can order direct from our website http://www.beercartel.com.au/ and have Malt Runner delivered to your front door.

  13. Jade Connor says:

Having been trying everywhere to get this beer, Toowoomba is totally sold out. Definitely needs to become part of the permanent range!

  14. Liam says:

I knew Malt Runner was a limited release but I didn’t realise how limited. I bought a 6-pack so I could try it and now I can’t get any more. I love Squires beer and Malt Runner is clearly their best. Please make it part of the permanent range or at the very least, release some more before this winter is over … please!!!

  15. Adam Hawkins says:

Best Brew i have ever tasted, i bought two cartons and cant find anywhere else in Brisbane. Consumed both now, any chance you can mass produce this brew and make it permanent? Regards, Adam

  16. Hopkin says:

I agree with Adam Hawkins this is am ABSOLUTE cracker of a beer.

Please keep up the good work and if you don’t make it permanent re-release! Thanks for the memories.

  17. Jay says:

I enjoyed this at the Norman hotel on tap and then went and bought a carton when it came out, and have been waiting for it to become a permanent fixture in your range. Is this going to happen?
