Wednesday 5 May 2010 - Australia’s New Norcia Abbey Ale, created by the renowned brewers at Malt Shovel Brewery in Camperdown NSW, has won gold at the 2010 Brewers Association World Beer Cup, which took place during April in Colorado, USA. New Norcia Abbey Ale defeated 34 other entries from around the globe to take the top award in the ‘Other Belgian-style Ale’ category.
The World Beer Cup is the largest and most prestigious commercial brewing competition in the world. The 2010 event - the eighth bi-annual competition - attracted 3,330 entrants from 44 countries. Prior to New Norcia Abbey Ale’s win, Malt Shovel Brewery had previously enjoyed success at the competition with James Squire’s Pilsener taking gold in 2008.
“Everyone at Malt Shovel Brewery is very proud to have received this prestigious award,” said Tony Jones, Malt Shovel Chief Brewer. “New Norcia Abbey Ale, launched in 2007, is the only authentic Abbey Ale brewed in Australia. It was originally handcrafted especially for the monks and respected members of the Benedictine Community of New Norcia in West Australia.”
The product of Australian pale malted barley, raw and Belgian sugar brewed with imported hops and fermented with Belgian Ale yeast, New Norcia Abbey Ale is a golden monastic ale with intriguing aromas and a rich heavenly finish. Spiciness from the Styrian Goldings hops and the Belgian yeast fermentation creates a perfect balance between the barley and the richness of the malt. The alcohol level of 7% ABV adds to the complexity.
“New Norcia Abbey Ale is an aromatic and unique brew and we’re delighted it was recognised by the judges. It is now available in speciality liquor stores around Australia and we encourage as many Australian beer-aficionados as possible to try this award-winning brew,” finished Tony.

Abbey Ale is the best beer I have tasted in Australia
Hello folks . . . have just discovered Abbey Ale. What an excellent beer. It has nudged a few of my favourites down a notch to vie for top spot in my personal rankings. Bought from Dan Murphys in Noosa. I’ll definitely be back for more. Another feather in the James Squire cap.
I would have to say this is the # one beer on my list give it a try …best part about it is i’m only 1 hour drive away from New Norcia
